One of the most heavily used modalities in a clinic using biofeedback, for patient therapy, is surface Electromyography (sEMG).  One of the most heavily used items in a sEMG biofeedback clinic is the Surface EMG Preamplifier.  The Surface EMG Preamplifier is an essential building block for external and internal muscle placements.  (Download chart in “resources” section below for common placements)

Surface electromyography is the study of muscle, more precisely, it is the study of a muscles motor unit action potential.  In a rehab setting it provides the clinician with information pertaining to under or over utilization of the muscle, whether the muscle is at rest or work, the coordination of the muscle as it pertains to other muscles, movement patterns, pain, disuse and atrophy.

For most clinics, utilizing the Pathway instrumentation, a standard sEMG preamplifier is sufficient and most cost effective.  It should, under most circumstances, provide the clinician with a long life before a replacement preamplifier is needed.  However, some, very busy, clinics find themselves replacing the standard preamplifier on a more frequent basis.  It is at this point that you should consider upgrading from a standard sEMG preamplifier to a ruggedized sEMG preamplifier.

The ruggedized sEMG preamplifier is a heavy duty five foot long (5′) preamplifier wire can be used for either A or B channel for the Pathway MR or TR series handheld units. The lead wire is available in the color grey only and should at least double the useful life expectancy of a standard sEMG preamplifier.
