How can I use my Bed Wedge for Pelvic Health?

Using a Bed Wedge for pelvic health can be useful for positioning the pelvis at the correct angle to aid in many pelvic health routines prescribed by your pelvic floor therapist!  Many leading pelvic health therapists recommend a wedge that is at least 7 to 8 inches high and wide and deep enough to support the pelvic floor and thighs.  This height provides the best angle for exercises, relaxation and prolapse control.

Performing Exercises:

You can perform various exercises using a bed wedge.  These include:

    1. Kegel Exercises: A contraction of the pelvic floor muscles whereby the muscles of the pelvic floor are drawn upward. CLICK HERE for a Real Time ultrasound video that demonstrates what a pelvic floor/Kegel contraction looks like.  These pelvic floor contractions can be done with or without resistance.  If resistance is desired, the CMT Ball, band and clip set that can be purchased by CLICKING HERE.  The use of the bed wedge in conjunction with the Ball Band and clip is a low cost alternative for strengthening pelvic floor muscles to help with incontinence and sexual health.
    2. Pelvic Tilts: Pelvic tilt exercises can stretch and strengthen your abdominal muscles, and help to relieve sciatica and low back (lumbar) pain.  The wedge can help support the thighs and knees while performing these exercises.

Other Benefits of using a Bed Wedge for Pelvic Health:

  1. Pelvic Alignment:  A bed wedge can align the pelvis properly during sleep.  By relieving pressure on on pelvic joints and muscle a bed wedge reduces strain or discomfort in the pelvic region.
  2. Improved Circulation: Elevating the pelvis can enhance blood circulation in the pelvic region, which can aid in reducing swelling and promoting healing.
  3. Reduce Pressure: Elevating the pelvis with a bed wedge can alleviate pressure on the pelvic floor muscles. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse, or conditions such as endometriosis.  For those individuals who are self inserting pessaries a bed wedge will help the user insert pessaries by using gravity to position the organ to it’s natural position.
  4. Relief from Symptoms: For individuals experiencing pelvic health issues such as urinary incontinence or pelvic congestion syndrome, a bed wedge provides relief by reducing symptoms and discomfort associated with these conditions.
  5. Support during Pregnancy: Pregnancy lends itself to pelvic discomfort due to the weight of the growing uterus. Using a bed wedge can offer support and alleviate pressure on the pelvis, helping them to sleep more comfortably.
  6. Post-Surgery Support: After a pelvic floor repair or hysterectomy, a bed wedge will aid healing. Reducing strain on the surgical site promotes optimal positioning for recovery.
